I had driven by Cala Renee countless times, and since I have curly hair I thought I would try it. From the reservationist, to the women who greeted me upon arrival, everyone was very professional and very nice. Each aspect of the procedure was discussed in detail, every question answered, and Katerina and Lisbet (spelling?...I was so under her spell after my head massage and shampoo I barely knew my own name. It was the best I've ever had in a salon and I've been visiting salons for well over 4 decades!) were so great. Katerina is an artist, I absolutely love my new hair style and color, and now can't imagine going anywhere else. I made appointments for months out before leaving the salon, and can't wait to return. I was also very pleased with how reasonable the prices for services and products are. The salon is very well presented, warm and comfortable and very clean. There seems to be a nice camaraderie between staff members as well. Thank you so much for a lovely experience. I've already sent before and after pictures to a number of friends, and they are all saying the same- gorgeous cut and color! I would highly recommend Cala Renee!

I've been going to the salon for a few years and always love getting my haircut from Steph. So, I knew my curly toddler would be in good hands for his first haircut here too. Dear Cala, My first appointment with you was exactly what I'd hoped for. From the initial evaluation of my hair and discussion of what I hoped for with my haircut appointment, to the exquisite hairwashing experience, to the actual haircut, I couldn't be happier. Thank you for a great experience. As I mentioned numerous times during my visit, I felt disloyal to the hairdresser I've been going to for about 7 years (since I discovered her at a salon in Brookline). I know she will understand, however I still felt like I was cheating on her! Hearing that you know her and that there is in fact a small curly girl community here in the Boston/North Shore area, made me feel a little less disloyal. You helped me realize that this switching of hairdressers for reasons like mine (relocating from Boston to Gloucester) isn't uncommon. Seems a bit silly to spend a whole paragraph talking about it, but that goes to show you how loyal I am! If I had to make two suggestions, it would be this. It would be great to receive a follow-up email with product suggestions. Even if I wasn't prepared to purchase anything during my appointment, I'd like to have a list of the products you suggested so that I could get them the next time I'm in the salon (or when I next need product). While I can purchase them elsewhere, I tend to purchase from the salon, given that you made the suggestions and I want to support you. I suppose I could've simply taken a picture of the product - I'll do that next time. And the other thing would be to send an email with suggestions for how to do followup hair at home. You gave me three steps for using the Innersense Gel (I forget the name of it), but for the life of me, I can't remember what they were, LOL. I've wanted to come to this salon for YEARS and by some miracle they were able to fit me in as a walk in today! Im thrilled with my haircut and they even gave me a "cheat sheet" to take home so I can keep my hair healthy. I found my new salon and i couldn't be happier.

I had my first ever curly cut not too long ago. My experience was mixed. The salon is beautiful, clean and comfortable and everyone very friendly and professional. My stylist was very pleasant and took the necessary time to go over hair goals etc. I mentioned to her that my wavy hair is very fine, very soft, and not all that dense. As such, it gets very easily weighed down and very easily overmoisturized. I told her I only put a little conditioner on my mids and ends because anything more or closer to the roots and it goes flat. She said no it’s a matter of using the right products, you’ll see how your curls will bounce right up when I’m done. She went ahead with cutting, then washing and styling. Sadly, I left the salon that day with limp, flat, lifeless hair that was practically straight because she did not listen to what I told her. Yes I know she’s the professional, but I also know my own hair. As a fine haired wavy, my hair does not react well to the usual procedures and products that the typical dryer, courser more curly hair types need. Being a curly hair specialist, I would have hoped that she would know that. And I’ve been struggling to style it after this cut also. It just seems to not want to lay right and I wind up fighting with it every morning. So I am unsure if I want to return because I question how much experience she has with my hair type. I wanted to share my thoughts in hopes that it will encourage the stylists to listen to and respect what their clients tell them. We all have different hair and it needs to be treated individually according to its own characteristics.

The good - my hair color is fantastic, products used made my curls silky. Staff super friendly, professional and accommodating. Pricing in line with other salon prices for color. The bad - I was charged $15 for education! Info shared wasn’t exactly trade secret. My haircut was more of a trim with a few haphazard layers. I am being generous when I say it lasted 5 mins for price of $95. It is NOT an even cut but was told this was method of growth/ curls. Time will tell.

I continue to refer others to the Cala team and have only had positive feedback. The corollary to the above is that scheduling on line can be challenging some time. Then again, if you ask they do accommodate and often bend over backwards to do so.

This was my first visit to Cala Renee to learn how to style my natural curly hair. It was well worth the consultation. This is a major change for me, as I have blowed dried my hair for 50+ years and now I have learned how to wash, apply product and let it air dry or use a diffuser. Looks healthy and I'm not losing a ton of hair blow drying it anymore. So much easier. Boyfriend loves it. Thank you, Erin, for your expertise. DCW

My experience with my stylist was mixed. She was new to working with hair as curly and thick as mine (I have type 4 hair). The only issues she had working with my hair texture had to do with detangling. It was difficult for her to detangle and took a long time because she wasn't the most experience with detangling my type of hair. Type 4 hair can be hard to detangle if you don't know how. Type 4 hair is also very prone to breakage! So knowing how to detangle it correctly is crucial or can result in many unnecessary breakages. My stylist was a bit rough with my hair but I know she tried her best, I wish she knew how to detangle it because I think then it wouldn't have taken as long. Of course, I got charged extra time because it took her so long to detangle my hair. This upset me because I do not think it was my fault that it took long. I understand and respect the policy but I can't help but wonder if would it have taken as long if the stylist had known how to detangle my hair. As a shop specializing in curls, I would hope stylists would be trained to manage ALL hair textures. That is why I took one star away from my rating. But everything else with the styling process went really well and I loved the results. The second star that I took away from my rating also has to do with my hair texture but is more towards the stylist's attitude. My stylist was very kind and I could tell she wanted the best for my hair but some of her comments about my hair made me uncomfortable. When I first sat in the chair, my stylist and I chatted a bit, she got to know my hair more and my goals for my hair. One of the first things she said to me was a comment that insisted that my hair was "hard to grow". This did not affect me very much and I let her know that I have never had any problems or concerns with hair growth and moved on to the next thing. I didn't think about it again until the end of our appointment. My stylist began going over the aftercare treatment and when to return to the salon. Despite my addressing her belief in the beginning while discussing when to come back into the salon she insisted that I wait TWICE the amount as regular clients because my hair takes so long to grow! At this moment I could not believe she brushed off what I said about my hair and continued on with her beliefs about my hair. This may sound like a misunderstanding or an unimportant comment but I hope you can understand that it is more than that. As a black woman, I have experienced many comments made out of ignorance, stereotypes, and lack of education about black hair. It is a stereotype that "kinky" or "coily" textured hair does not and cannot grow the same way as others. I believe my stylist saw me as this racial stereotype and continued to throughout my appointment. This is a false stereotype, of course, that is very hurtful to the black community. Although I would hope for stylists to be well educated on all textures of hair, I would have loved for her to learn through me, that type 4 hair grows just fine. But it's the fact that she ignored what I said about my own hair and kept running with the stereotype she had of type 4 hair. This really discouraged me and made me feel less than by the end of my appointment. I have not yet scheduled my return appointment because I was so conflicted about the first experience I had there. I hope that this review can show Cala Renee how important it is to educate stylists on all different kinds of hair. Racial stereotypes are pushed onto all of us and people of all races have their own stereotypes of people based on race whether they know it or not. I hope my story about my experience with my stylist at Cala Renee can help the stylists to reevaluate the way they think about textured hair and work to make POC clients feel as comfortable as possible. There is always room for growth and education. I want to come back to Cala Renee and have a better experience than the one I had.

This did not affect me very much and I let her know that I have never had any problems or concerns with hair growth and moved on to the next thing. I didn't think about it again until the end of our appointment. My stylist began going over the aftercare treatment and when to return to the salon. Despite my addressing her belief in the beginning while discussing when to come back into the salon she insisted that I wait TWICE the amount as regular clients because my hair takes so long to grow! At this moment I could not believe she brushed off what I said about my hair and continued on with her beliefs about my hair. This may sound like a misunderstanding or an unimportant comment but I hope you can understand that it is more than that. As a black woman, I have experienced many comments made out of ignorance, stereotypes, and lack of education about black hair. It is a stereotype that "kinky" or "coily" textured hair does not and cannot grow the same way as others. I believe my stylist saw me as this racial stereotype and continued to throughout my appointment. This is a false stereotype, of course, that is very hurtful to the black community. Although I would hope for stylists to be well educated on all textures of hair, I would have loved for her to learn through me, that type 4 hair grows just fine. But it's the fact that she ignored what I said about my own hair and kept running with the stereotype she had of type 4 hair. This really discouraged me and made me feel less than by the end of my appointment. I have not yet scheduled my return appointment because I was so conflicted about the first experience I had there. I hope that this review can show Cala Renee how important it is to educate stylists on all different kinds of hair. Racial stereotypes are pushed onto all of us and people of all races have their own stereotypes of people based on race whether they know it or not. I hope my story about my experience with my stylist at Cala Renee can help the stylists to reevaluate the way they think about textured hair and work to make POC clients feel as comfortable as possible. There is always room for growth and education. I want to come back to Cala Renee and have a better experience than the one I had.

I’ve always been told I have really thick hair but Katerina said I have medium/fine hair and used light products. Katerina was my stylist and she did a great job listening to what I wanted and she taught me how to wash, condition and style my curls. She provided me with information but I didn't feel pressured to buy products (although I did get some new conditioner and gel, which I love and their products are cruelty free). The staff was friendly and I thought it was a great experience. On a side note, I had noticed in some Yelp reviews that people complained about the parking - there is PLENTY of parking within one block. There is ample paid parking spots on the main street and free 4 hour parking on the side streets.

I had a very good experience at Cala Renee, I left the salon very happy with my hair cut. Ashley was my stylist, she is very knowledgeable about curly hair and spent time explaining to me how to keep my hair from drying out and how to use the products and how to dry my hair in a way to get the best curl definition. She did not pressure me to buying products, only gave me samples, that was always something that turned me off from hair salons ( pressuring to buy products). I will definitely go back and I would recommend Cala Renee to anybody with curly hair. Oh and Lucas who washed my hair was also very nice and welcoming, great head massage after the wash, I felt that he too was very knowledgeable about curly hair techniques.

I was a little worried about getting my very curly hair cut. As you curly girls no 1" = 4" when it comes to cutting curly hair. They actually know that at Cala Renee and are very careful to be sure you just get a nice style from your cut, not a shearing. I unfortunately had to go home and redo the product because it wasn’t done properly for my hair type. I have thick 3c hair so you need to go section by section and that wasn’t done. I’m not sure if they’re just not used to my hair type or what. So I guess I would return if I planned to immediately go home and re-do it.

Katerina gave me my first devacut today and I couldn’t be happier! I have done the curly girl method for a few years but this was my first dry haircut. It is everything I never got from a wet haircut. After my wet cuts I would have to go home and “fix” longer or wayward pieces but still was never really happy with how my hair turned out. Why did I wait so long! Katerina was very knowledgeable about styling and products. And the scalp massage when she was washing my hair was amazing. She really listened to me and checked in frequently while she was cutting to make sure length etc was ok. I would never have thought she was a junior stylist! She asked me lots of questions and could see that I knew and have done advice she was going to give me. Told me I take very good care of my curls which was nice to hear. She was very friendly and caring about my comfort. I got my hair cut and styled by Ashley and it felt like she just liked to hear herself speak. A lot of what she said I already knew. I just wanted to finally get my first Deva Cut. Something that stood out to me was something she said a couple of times “we all have had the bad hair cut experience” in which I responded I haven’t had to go through that Thank God! She smiled and assured me she wouldn’t be my first that she would take care of me. She asked me how I wore my hair as well as what I used for hair products and how long or short I wanted to keep or take off. I came in as suggested with my hair washed, styled as I would normally wear it so they could see and help give me the results I would want in the end. I even sent pictures of my hair prior to my visit. I told Ashley I wanted to keep my length not go too short cause my hair had been in the middle of my back with shrinkage. She suggested doing layers and I said no because if ever in the future I want to straighten my hair I don’t want it to look choppy she said she understood and would cut it in a way that it wouldn’t look that way. She used the line of Innersence on my hair which I asked why not devacurl products and she said she liked it better than DevaCurl hair products. Well I left with my hair looking like a dry thirsty afro. She didn’t pay attention to my hair type and what my hair needed. I have beautiful curls and have pictures of before and after and I am saddened by my cut and waste of $$ I would not recommend nor would I go back. If you have thick curls get your hair done by someone that has real experience with your hair type. While sitting there everyone I saw that worked there as well as came in for their visit had very thin hair which is very easy to take care of and use lighter products on. I have never given a review and this being my FIRST ever DevaCut experience and Curl Cut I am sad this was my experience.

I even sent pictures of my hair prior to my visit. I told Ashley I wanted to keep my length not go too short cause my hair had been in the middle of my back with shrinkage. She suggested doing layers and I said no because if ever in the future I want to straighten my hair I don’t want it to look choppy she said she understood and would cut it in a way that it wouldn’t look that way. She used the line of Innersence on my hair which I asked why not devacurl products and she said she liked it better than DevaCurl hair products. Well I left with my hair looking like a dry thirsty afro. She didn’t pay attention to my hair type and what my hair needed. I have beautiful curls and have pictures of before and after and I am saddened by my cut and waste of $$ I would not recommend nor would I go back. If you have thick curls get your hair done by someone that has real experience with your hair type. While sitting there everyone I saw that worked there as well as came in for their visit had very thin hair which is very easy to take care of and use lighter products on. I have never given a review and this being my FIRST ever DevaCut experience and Curl Cut I am sad this was my experience.

Had my first appointment here yesterday and had such a good experience. Sarah really listened to what I wanted and she relayed to me what she thought as well as what the expectation should be. They teach you how to use the products and give you a little bag of samples on the way out which was super nice. The cut came out great and was what I wanted. Everyone in the salon made me feel at ease, and they were all so friendly and nice - it felt like a place where people enjoy their work. The experience felt luxurious and indulgent, and Cala radiates skill and confidence. I was there for 2 hours, and when I walked out the door I could not believe that my curls could look so healthy and shiny! It truly felt like a miracle. Now, the downside: I followed Cala's directions precisely with the products she recommended (and used), but I have been unable to replicate the results she got. Yes, I'm getting curls, but nothing like the perfectly clumped shiny perfection that she coaxed from my hair. I can't figure out if I'm doing something wrong, if my water is different, if it's because I'm airdrying and they set me under a dryer -- but my hair is not turning out anywhere near the way it did at the salon. This makes me sad -- if I can't do it myself, it's not a viable style. And oh, how I've tried. :-( Your mileage may vary - as no two curly heads are the same. My experience IN the salon was second-to-none, though, so I do recommend them if you're trying to unlock the secrets of your curls.

Yes, I'm getting curls, but nothing like the perfectly clumped shiny perfection that she coaxed from my hair. I can't figure out if I'm doing something wrong, if my water is different, if it's because I'm airdrying and they set me under a dryer -- but my hair is not turning out anywhere near the way it did at the salon. This makes me sad -- if I can't do it myself, it's not a viable style. And oh, how I've tried. :-( Your mileage may vary - as no two curly heads are the same. My experience IN the salon was second-to-none, though, so I do recommend them if you're trying to unlock the secrets of your curls.

I had high hopes when I went to this salon as I saw the excellent reviews but was so disappointed with my Deva haircut and color. My gray roots were not covered and the rest of my hair was too dark. She cut the top of my hair too short and now sticks up, when everyone knows that curly hair should not be cut short. My hair does not fall in a cascade as before. Very, very disappointed.

Everyone was very nice but the style and hair cutting was not worth the price. I did not like the feeling of my hair after the product was put in, it felt like clay. And the way my hair is cut, I can’t even style it normally. Half of my hair is shorter than the other.. I know now I’m not a fan of deva curl products

I kept asking her to take more bulk out but at the end of the day she didn't. I would like someone to 'finish' taking out the bulk but need a master stylist. Any suggestions?

This was my first time to Cala Renee, albeit not my first Devacut. The salon itself is very nice and clean, and I enjoyed the wash stations being downstairs where there was relaxing music playing. My hair was cut by Brianna, who was very knowledgeable and friendly. She gave me an undercut around my right side and the back, and a trim on the rest to reshape and restore a healthy look to my hair. I love how the cut turned out and the additional tips she gave me during the whole process. I'm looking forward to my next haircut here.

Presentation sets the tone--I was greeted with a generous smile--not just a quick "I'll be with you in a moment" smile, but as if the 2 at the desk were really glad to see me. Briana introduced herself, took me to a station, and asked me about my hair, which became curly when I turned 70. I explained that I heard about the salon from a friend w curly hair, and since I couldn't get a comb or brush through the tangled mass, decided to try it. Briana asked what I used on my hair, and in a non-judgmental manner talked about sulfates and silicone and their affect on the hair--not "omg--you use what?!" She trimmed the dry curls, and treated the hair to remove the silicone buildup, and taught me how to enhance the curl after a shampoo and conditioning. I was taught how to revive the curls each morning, and left with a complimentary gift bag, rather than pressure to buy something then and there. I look forward to going back in a few months a for a trim and revitalization.

I'm so glad I found this salon! I came in with heavy, unmanageable hair, I always felt like I was wearing a wool scarf, and left with a light new haircut. Brianna emphasized my curls while leaving the length (I was worried I'd have to go short!). I left with new knowledge,a few products, and instructions. I'm so glad I finally stopped fighting my curl, no more wrestling with round brushes, flat irons, etc with frizzy at best results. Thank you!!

The service was absolutely amazing ! Having Cala work on my hair was really worth the while. She educated me every step of the way and made me feel really comfortable about the process of cutting my hair. I don't really trust that many people cutting my hair but Cala did an amazing job working with my own curls. There was a 50% difference in my hair but that was because my hair is severely damaged but she did manage to bring lots of my curls back alive. I thank all the staff for being so kind and always asked if I needed anything. Cala Renee salon is definitely a place I will go back to when dealing with hair.

Explained very well the Deva curl products, how to use them effectively and the reason behind all of them. I left well informed and very pleased with my cut. As someone with natural curly hair, I felt I had finally found professionals that knew the special needs of my type of hair and were willing to dry-cut my hair. She simply said we all need to go through those processes to then realize what we really want from our hair. Before touching my hair she asked me what I wanted and gave me recommendations. I asked about coloring my hair and she recommended to do it later on- so my curls can get the best moisture. She showed me that she deeply cares about her clients and wants the best for their hair. I will be back in October to get my hair retouched. I can't wait to continue to see my hair be revived! Thank you so much!

Not only were they incredibly cool, kind and understanding, they gave me a beautiful new cut and were just so easy to be with! I can't express how happy I am and how much I appreciate their kindness. It might not seem like much, but for me it is everything. They were wonderful! My new cut is awesome and they were so helpful in teaching me how to keep it that way. After a wonderful experience there today, I couldn't agree more. Ashley was INCREDIBLE with my daughter -- very sweet and upbeat and reassuring for my daughter, and very informative and patient with me and all of my questions. The haircut looks great, and it was a very positive experience all around. Ashely really was fantastic, and truly seemed to care a lot about making sure her clients are armed with the knowledge and products (without pushing ANYTHING at all) to ensure that they are getting the most out of those beautiful curls!

I'm very glad I came here. I wasn't able to use my hair down before coming here to get my hair cut and now I can. Cala taught me how to take care of my curls and how to wash them properly and how to condition them so they aren't frizzy. Originally I was so nervous as this particular visit was not only my first DevaCurl hair cut but it was my "big chop". For the past few years I had been growing out a really bad hair style that had severely burnt and damaged my hair One of the things that made me the most apprehensive about getting a DevaCurl cut was the fact that I have biracial curly hair which some know is very different than "regular" curly hair. It was really hard for me to believe that someone without my kind of hair would know how to cut and style it. Before Sarah started cutting she took the time to really understand my hair goals and listened to me as I rambled on about my struggles with my hair over the past few years. I was so impressed that she wasn't intimidated with the "lion's mane" I referred to as my hair. While she was cutting I could tell that she really knew what she was doing and I gave her the free will to cut as much as she need to remove the dry damaged ends. Once Sarah was finished with the dry cut my hair was washed with the DaveCurl No-Poo and I was treated to a wonderful head massage while my hair was being conditioned. I returned to Sarah for styling. She she applied a DevaCurl styling cream and gel and explained what each product was for, how much to apply and how to apply. Not once was a hair brush or comb used on my curly hair, the "finger comb" technique was used. I sat under a hooded dryer for 15 minutes and when my hair dried Sarah made a few more cuts so that my hair would fall perfectly. I loved my hair cut! It was the first time in three years that I had been able to wear it down naturally. This is my new salon and Sarah is for sure my new stylist. I have already booked my next appointment. I love how special you treat your customers! The head massage while washing my hair is WONDERFUL! Colleen was very friendly and caring. I love the airy feel to your salon, too. Nice and bright. Wow! All I can say. I never thought I would learn to enjoy my curls. I have tried so many salons who say they know what to do with curly hair, but they did not know what to do with my finely textured hair with a propensity to frizz. And they also could not teach me what to do after I left the salon. Cala not only cut my hair expertly, she also taught me how to recreate the style that I left her salon with. This is a first. And what is even more amazing, is that she adjusted the cut so that I can also wear it straight when the mood strikes. Thank you will never express how grateful I feel.

My 12 year old daughter came into the salon with frizzy, unmanageable curls and came out with a gorgeous new do! I actually cried when I saw her! She was so happy with it that she kept looking at herself in the mirror like she couldn't believe it was her hair. All the staff is personable and the spa has a great atmosphere. They all knew what they were doing and didn't push products on me...(although we ended up getting the Deva curl products which work great...a bit pricey though). Ive already recommended it to friends with curly hair.

Sarah listened well and while clearly a curly hair expert never treated me like I didn't know anything. She found the perfect compromise that allowed me to keep my hair long how I like it and also help achieve the shaping my hair needed and explained the different options. She even kept it a little longer than my "no shorter than" described length--clearly listening! Plus, even at other "curly" salons in the area, for the first time I left with my hair curly and styled how I would do it and looking fabulous. No rewash necessary (which fellow curly girls should really appreciate!).

I had an appointment with Colleen, during the consultation I discussed my concerns about my hair to her and she explained what she was going to do. She explained every step of the cut to me and why they cut your hair when it is dry, she showed me how to wash my curly hair and how to use the products. She was very thorough. Upon leaving the salon, Colleen gave me a list with the name of the products she used on me highlighted. Sarah is awesome! She makes you feel very comfortable and takes the time to understand what it is you are looking for. I have never been happy leaving a hair salon before but Sarah made this the best curly hair experience I've ever had. I've always been so afraid of cutting my hair short but Sarah gave me the cutest deva girl cut above my shoulders with beautiful highlights and I am in love! She showed me exactly how to style it and encouraged me to embrace my curly hair. I will definetly be a regular at this salon! Sarah is the best! -Mykela

I have been a client of Colleen's twice now. Her head massages are fantastic with my shampoo and she's super friendly! I never feel pressured to buy product, so it's nice to go and relax and get a cut! Parking can be tricky, but it's worth the hassle!

My first visit today was a wonderful experience. This is the only place to go if you have curly hair that you want to look it's very best. I learned a lot about my curly and how to enhance and pamper my curls at home between visits to CalaRenee Salon. Very professional and friendly staff. They create a very "spa like" atmosphere. First visit for my 8 year old daughter who has a massive head of curls. The staff was very nice...Sarah was extremely pleasant, patient and really listened and explained what she was doing each step of the way. The only negative comment I would have is that the products seemed higher priced then most salon products. I bought 3 products, in larger bottles because one of them was only available in the larger size and I hate running out of one product before you run out of the others...in hind sight I guess I could have gotten a small no poo since you use a lot less of it. Curly girl book $14, a $4 microfiber towel, product, $40 kids cut and tips...total $210...about $75-100 more then I expected.

Yesterday I had my first curly cut with Sarah and couldn't be more pleased. She listened to my thoughts, kindly gave a few suggestions, and snip/snip, my hair had new bounce. Thank you also to Stephanie for a wonderful wash and head massage as well as explanation as to how to use the diva products. Although i haven't yet really tried them at home yet, I am going to try the samples before that purchase. A very gently saloon and nice atmosphere. Thank you Sarah for a great cut. Peggy

Being fairly new to Beverly, I visited Cala Renee Salon for the first time this week. I had an appointment with Cala for a cut and highlights. The service I received was very professional but warm and personal at the same time. Cala made sure she knew exactly what cut I was looking for and gave me great advice on the highlights and I am more than happy with the results. Brittany gives the most relaxing head massages. Overall the atmosphere in the salon is very friendly and welcoming. Moving to a new area and finding things like salons, doctors, dentists, etc. is always stressful and can take time, and I am glad to have discovered my new salon.
